These are places where I have stayed (except where noted) and
recommend (well, not all) for one or more of the following reasons:

• Located in town, not out by the freeway exit,
  so you can dump the car, and explore by foot or bike
• Located in a lively, culturally happening place
• Located in a scenic rural or wilderness area
• Architecturally appealing, which can mean anything
  from "splendidly ornate Art Deco" to "nice neon sign"
• Run by friendly and/or characterful hosts
• Populated by interesting, fun, likeably dubious,
  or otherwise engaging people
• Affordable
